The five worst video game movie adaptations (not named Borderlands)

Borderlands The Movie isn't getting any love, but will it be the worst movie adapted from a video game? It would have to beat out some classics.

Video games and movies should fit together. They are both fantastic ways to tell stories, immersing customers in a setting with characters they care about. Video games give players the opportunity to control their favorite characters, while movies bring those characters to life on the big or small screen. However, the two industries frequently fail when coming together. Just like the issues that plagued comic book movies for years. Something about turning video games into movies does not work, and that’s usually the case when turning movies into video games.

The most recent attempt at doing so is the Borderlands movie set to launch on Friday, August 9. Early reviews hit this movie hard, with it even hitting Rotten Tomatoes with a 0 percent score when it was first listed. That’s not good at all. It spurs the conversation of whether it will take the place at the top of the list of the worst video game movies of all time. It will be a tight race because that list features some bad entries.

Street Fighter (1994)

Street Fighter is a beloved video game series. It’s had some low points throughout the years, but overall, the games are more praised than not, especially as it enjoys a resurgence with Street Fighter 6. In 1994 Capcom attempted to take the popular game into the movie space and that was a huge blunder from a creative standpoint. Financially, the film made nearly three times its budget, but the story was no where near what fans loved from the video game franchise.

The casting stands out as Brussels action star, Jean-Claude Van Damme appeared as American solider, Guile. In what would be his last role, Raul Julia played M. Bison. Not one actor accurately represented the character from the video game. Many of them are almost comically incorrect. The story has nothing to do with a tournament either, instead it features Guile attempting to bring a group together to take out Bison’s Shadoloo organization.
