Remembering Marvel's excellent past video games

Despite Marvel's current success with the MCU, their gaming department seems to focus on tired mobile games that seem to push story towards tired past stories and microtransactions. But Marvel used to have some of the BEST games. Here's a look back at some of the more creative ones.

Spider-Man: The Video Game - 1991 - Sega

Sure, to most people the early 90's arcade experience was the X-Men arcade game. But not me. See, at Marc's Pizza Time Palace, there was a six player X-Men machine. And across the room was a different Marvel machine and, most likely, me. Spider-Man: The Video Game.

If you thought the roster of X-Men was confusing because you probably didn't know it was tied to the pilot episode of Pryde of the X-Men, you were in for a real treat when you saw THIS roster. In this beat 'em up, obviously, you can play as Spider-Man. You can also play as Black Cat. Classic. Oh, who are the other two characters you can pick? Why, who else but Sub-Mariner and Hawkeye of course. I'm not playing. It was wild.

The thing that really made this game stand out though is it's innovative zooming. Let's say you're fighting the Venom boss. Eventually he breaks a near by tanker which, surprise, is filled with more symbiote. Suddenly he grows so big that you're up to his ankle. The game "zooms out" and suddenly you're a tiny version of your character engaging in a side scroller like game trying to catch up to Venom. I had never seen anything like it.
