The Most Valuable Water-Type Pokemon Cards Of All Time
4. Kyogre Star – Holofoil
Set: Delta Species
Market Price: $412.49
A shiny version of a legendary ‘mon is always going to be a hot commodity for collectors and fans, and this Kyogre Star from 2005’s Delta Species set certainly confirms that as it kicks off our top four. Featuring two interesting attacks that synergize well together as well as unusual artwork from shiny Pokemon master Masakazu Fukuda showcasing Kyogre breaching the surface of the ocean, it’s no wonder this card commands over $400 dollars nearly 20 years after it was unveiled.
3. Mudkip Star – Holofoil
Set: Team Rocket Returns
Market Price: $417.99
The only non-evolved, non-legendary card on this list is a shiny variant (or at least it’s supposed to be) of one of the best water-type starter Pokemon of all time: Mudkip. This 2004 card from the Team Rocket Returns set is actually quite strong for a basic Pokemon of the era, especially if your foe only has one prize card remaining. If that condition is met, Mudkip Star’s Spring Back attack does an impressive 70 damage plus putting your foe’s ‘mon to sleep – all for only two water-type energies! Mudkip rules, and seemingly collectors and fans agree, as this card’s over-$400 price tag is truly impressive for a starter ‘mon.
2. Vaporeon Star – Holofoil
Set: Power Keepers
Market Price: $589.00
Somehow only the fourth-most valuable Eeveelution card of all time, this shiny Vaporeon Star card from the Power Keepers expansion could net you a small fortune if you’re able to get it graded out well by professional grading services. Even if not, this card’s close-to-$600 median value on the secondary market is still an astounding amount for a single piece of cardboard.
Much like the top card on this list, this Vaporeon card features beautiful Masakazu Fukuda artwork that literally bursts out of its frame – perhaps another reason why this card commands such a premium 17 years after it debuted.
1. Mew Star – Holofoil
Set: Dragon Frontiers
Market Price: $604.31
Here it is, the most valuable water-type card of all time. As you can see, much like the most valuable Eeveelution cards of all time, the top spots on this list (the top four, in fact) are all shiny variants of notable ‘mons. This Mew card, in particular, is notable for the fact that it is, truly, a water-type Mew – thanks to the “Delta Species” sub-type in which Pokemon types were changed willy-nilly.
While this card’s attacks weren’t overly impressive, the striking Masakazu Fukuda artwork of a shiny blue Mew on a vivid, bright red background coupled with the novelty of a water-type Mew means that this card creeps over the $600 threshold for collectors and fans on the secondary market. A deserving number one.
