It might come as a surprise to some, but no, I’m not totally against all of the new Old School RuneScape free-to-play quests, even though the other three were ranked as the bottom three.
If there was ever a non-original Old School RuneScape quest that truly fits the vibe – and really the entire culture – of the game, it’s Misthalin Mystery. For a free-to-play quest, this one is relatively complex, with multiple puzzles throughout the mansion, leading up to a surprise twist at what you think is the end – and then another one after that.
While you could argue that the mansion effectively being a copy of Draynor Manor takes something away from the quest itself, I would argue that it almost adds to the nostalgic effect without simply adding a new quest to Draynor Manor that may have affected its own essence.
There are a few intricacies associated with this quest that I don’t think the developers could have pulled off in Draynor Manor. That says a lot, given how challenging it can be to capture that Old School feel from the mid-2000s in a modern-day quest addition.
Not having quick enough reflexes for the final puzzle may make you contemplate quitting the game (I witnessed this from a friend firsthand), but that only adds to the feeling of achievement once you’ve done it. This is one of very few non-members quests that provides such a feeling without combat. The Crafting experience reward doesn’t hurt, either.
