NFL: 5 possible cover athletes for the new Backyard Football game

If Backyard Football is indeed among the Backyard Sports games being revived, which NFL star should be on the cover?

Christian McCaffrey, RB, San Francisco 49ers

Speaking of Pablo Sanchez, Christian McCaffrey is pretty much the NFL equivalent of the do-it-all Backyard Sports legend.

Since adding McCaffrey to their roster via trade with the Carolina Panthers in the middle of the 2023 season, the San Francisco 49ers have been arguably the best team in the NFL, even if they are still seeking that elusive sixth Super Bowl ring.

Sure, he was just on the cover of Madden NFL 24, but both Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson are former Madden cover athletes as well, and that certainly shouldn’t disqualify them from being on the cover of Backyard Football either.

There was a strong case to be made for McCaffrey as last year’s NFL MVP, with the only thing keeping it from him likely the fact that it has become more of a quarterback award and no running back has won it since Adrian Peterson, a former Backyard Football star in his own right, a dozen years ago.

McCaffrey might just be the best player in the NFL – and perhaps the virtual world.
