NFL: 5 possible cover athletes for the new Backyard Football game
By Asher Fair
Patrick Mahomes, QB, Kansas City Chiefs
Though it didn’t happen in either of the two postseason matchups between the two, it’s safe to say that the torch has now officially been passed from Tom Brady to Patrick Mahomes – and from the New England Patriots to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Mahomes is already a three-time Super Bowl champion after becoming the first quarterback to lead his team to back-to-back Super Bowl titles since Brady two decades ago, doing so just one year after becoming the first NFL MVP to win the Super Bowl the same season this millennium.
Having been to four of the five most recent Super Bowls and six AFC Championship Games in a row since taking over from Alex Smith, No. 15 is now the quarterback who enters every season with the target on his back.
He is the new benchmark all other quarterbacks are compared to, and that doesn’t look like it will be changing anytime soon. He hasn’t lost a meaningful game in more than two and a half years, and every other signal caller in North America is trying to do whatever it takes to change that.
He is the face of the NFL, and he should be considered a top candidate to become the new Backyard Football cover athlete.
