After a multi-year “rain delay”, the Backyard Sports franchise is set to return, with Playground Productions slated to officially bring the video game series back "in the coming months". The company also plans to roll out Backyard Sports merchandise, movies, and TV shows.

Backyard Sports fans, which primarily consist of young adults who grew up in the early-to-mid 2000s, have been clamoring for a return of the iconic franchise for many, many years.

There have not been any new Backyard Sports titles since 2015, when there were two mobile apps released. Excluding mobile apps, there hasn’t been a new release since October 2010.

The official Backyard Sports Instagram page includes baseball, soccer, basketball, football, and hockey in its bio, five sports that were all featured in various Backyard Sports games from 1997 to 2010. During that 14-year stretch, 36 different games were released.

The primary focus of the fanbase, however, has been on baseball since the plans of the return were officially announced, so that's what we're going to focus on here.

Who will be on the cover of the new Backyard Baseball game? Past cover athletes include Cal Ripken Jr., Mike Piazza, Alex Rodriguez, Albert Pujols, and David Ortiz.

Here are five strong contenders.
