Magic: The Gathering – The 14 Best Black Sorceries

5. Thoughtseize
Sometimes Forces Your Foe To Concede Instantly On MTG Arena
Remember how I said Coercion used to be the standard rate for a discard spell back in the day? Well, when Thoughtseize debuted in 2007’s Lorwyn set, it immediately became the new standard-bearer for terrific discard spells.
This card is so massively powerful and debilitating on turn one that sometimes when playing MTG Arena, playing this card on your opponent will force them to immediately concede, as they simply don’t want their combo pieces or important cards to be forced out of their hand before they’ve even had a chance to play a land. Massively powerful.
4. Demonic Tutor
The Best MTG Search Spell Of All Time
Seems odd to put the best search card in MTG history only at number four on this list, but here we are. For one colorless mana and one black mana, you get any card from your library and put it straight into your hand.
Certainly, search cards have only gone downhill from this one that was printed as an uncommon in Alpha, back in 1993. In fact, 2001’s Odyssey set printed a card with this exact same effect, Diabolic Tutor, for exactly double the mana cost: two colorless and two black mana, and it was still highly popular and powerful!
