It has been nearly 10 years since the release of Fallout 4 but thanks to the recent success of Prime Video's Fallout series, people have found themselves flocking back to the older games that inspired the television show.

2015's Fallout 4 is considered to be one of the better games in the franchise, and it's actually the one that got me first into Fallout. If this is your first time playing, you may have a few questions.

Fallout is an action role-playing game. As such, you'll find yourself leveling up as you complete quests around The Commonwealth. Leveling up will improve your stats and grant you points to spend on your character's skills and perks, referred to in the game as "S.P.E.C.I.A.L."

S.P.E.C.I.A.L. is an acronym that represents the seven stats for your character: strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility, and luck. These perks can be upgraded to improve your character's overall efficiency and unlock additional abilities within that skill tree.

How to respec your SPECIAL Points in Fallout 4

If this is your first time playing Fallout or you've never played a role-playing game, looking at the SPECIAL tree may be a bit intimidating. There are a lot of abilities to choose from and you may not know what is best for your playstyle.

Let's say early on you allocate your points all in one branch of a skill tree only to find out later that you actually prefer another style. What can you do?

Unfortunately, there is no way to respec your character in Fallout 4 and return your SPECIAL Points. In other words, once you spend them, they are locked. While there are mods that allow you to reallocate your perks and skill points, that's only available on PC; no such mod exists on consoles.

The only way to unlock a skill or ability that you desire once you've spent your points is to level up and earn some more.

What is the max level in Fallout 4?

Thankfully, there is no maximum level in Fallout 4. So technically speaking, you are able to unlock every skill and perk in the game. However, as there are over 270 total SPECIALS and perks, you'll need to play quite a bit to reach the maximum effective level cap.

So the good news is, if you've already spent your skill points and discover another perk you want to unlock, you just need to grind some experience and level up a bit.

It's worth noting as well, that if playing on steam, the maximum player level you can reach is 65,535. According to the game's Steam forums, any XP you earn after you reach level 65,545 will crash your game. I don't know how tested this theory or how long they played for, but I really don't think you'll have to worry about it.
