Baldur's Gate 3 is an incredible game. It's so good, that we want more of it. Whether that comes in the form of DLC or an expansion, or a fourth full-fledged installment, it doesn't really matter. We just want more.

Well, unfortunately, it doesn't sound like we'll be getting it — at least not form Larian Studios.

Speaking at the Game Developers Conference (GDC), Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke confirmed that Baldur's Gate 3 will not receive DLC or an expansion.

Following Larian's success with Baldur's Gate 3, which received universal acclaim upon release, the developer is moving away from the Dungeons & Draogns IP and looking to do something new. This means if there is a Baldur's Gate 4 sometime in the future, it will be from another developer.

The exact quote from Vincke, shared via TikTok, reads:

""Baldur’s Gate 3 will always have a heart — a warm spot in our hearts. We’ll forever be proud of it, but we’re not going to continue it. We’re not going to make new expansions, which everybody is expecting us to do. We’re not going to make Baldur’s Gate 4, which everybody is expecting us to do. We’re going to move on, we’re going to move away from D&D, and we’re going to start making a new thing,”"

Following the shocking news, Michael Douse, director of publishing Larian, added his own statement on social media.

It's a bit odd that a studio with so much success with a game would suddenly ditch it, but Vincke — speaking to GameSpot about the decision —said "that's not what we were made for."

He added that Larian wants to "do big, new things. We don' t want to rehash the thing that we've already done."

As disappointing as that may be for fans who have loved Baldur's Gate 3, you've got to respect the studio's drive. It's easy to continue milking the cow, but Larian wants to do something bigger, and hopefully even better. That will be no easy task considering the critical acclaim Baldur's Gate 3 received.

But here's hoping Larian can find a way to replicate this game's success with another title in the future!
