Death Road to Canada is a 2016 indie game, which has received a Nintendo Switch release. Death Road to Canada asks an interesting question: what if Oregon Trail was good? Oregon Trail hardly needs an introduction, being the most famous edutainment game of all time. Death Road to Canada isn't interested in education - it's interested in being one of the most entertaining co-op games of all time.

Death Road to Canada is fairly simple, with it's greatest strengths being it's replayability and variety. Much like Oregon Trail, it is about a journey with a preset length where the real challenge is surviving. Unlike Oregon Trail, it is about a zombie apocalypse in which Canada is the last surviving nation. The goal is to reach Canada, and survive along the way by managing and gathering resources such as food, gasoline, weapons, and medical supplies.

Designed for couch multiplayer, which supports 2-4 players, Death Road to Canada is perfect for groups. Different survivors will be appearing on the Death Road, many of which can join the players' party on the journey to Canada. Some of these are regular people, some are rare characters like Santa or a Valkyrie, and some are custom made characters.

The character creator is a great feature, (I made the characters from King of the Hill for my trips on the Death Road) which adds to the game's incredible comedy. Death Road to Canada is one of the funniest games on the Nintendo Switch. In between missions to gather supplies, the characters in the players' party will banter back and forth. The rare characters tend to be hilarious, finding a medieval bard in a zombie apocalypse is funny on it's own, even before he joins forces with Santa.

Random chance events are one of the most important pieces of the games, making sure that no two playthroughs are the same. These events are sometimes missions to explore a location and find supplies or characters, new characters appearing and offering to join the group, trading camps which allow for bartering, crises which threaten the group, or hilarious scenes. At any moment, it is possible to get a chance event which can be a bandit attack or a Simpsons reference.

Death Road to Canada remains one of the best indie games on the Nintendo Switch. The pure variety is incredible, the game is anything but repetitive. The couch multiplayer is one of the best co-ops of the past 10 years. The comedy is second to none, and adds a lot when playing with a group. Death Road to Canada is a must play for fans of couch multiplayer, indie games, or good times.
