No. 4 - The Void Stares Back

Release date: October 6, 2010

The only quest boss battle that even closely rivaled that of Nomad’s Requiem in the early 2010s was the fight against the Pest Queen in The Void Stares Back. Void Knight quests didn’t come along until 2010, but the three-part series would not be overly intrusive to the OSRS game as we know it – or as we knew it in 2007.

And unlike Soul Wars, Pest Control already exists in the game, as it was a part of the game in 2007, having been released on April 18, 2006. You could almost argue that adding this series makes even more sense than expanding Nomad’s role following the addition of Soul Wars.

The Pest Queen battle was ahead of its time, and not just because of the mandatory use of the Korasi’s sword special attack. This was a multi-layer fight without actually being a multi-phase fight, in that you had to engage with both minions and allies throughout, all while maintaining your own combat role.

The rangers, which are on your side, take out the drones, which consistently heal the queen. So you have to distract – and subsequently deal with – the elite defilers, whose goal is to take out the rangers. Having no rangers equates to an ineffective battle plan, as the queen will effectively be able to continue to heal faster than you can deal damage.

This battle in Old School RuneScape would be an instant powerhouse, even in a game that has already seen a ton of combat mechanic innovation post-release.
