Assassin’s Creed is a beloved video game series. Dating back to 2007, the series has 31 entries across all platforms and entities. Assassin’s Creed: Shadows is one of the most anticipated games of 2024, with the series finally heading to the Sengoku period. Since its inception, AC has gone to some interesting time periods to tell the story of the Assassins versus the Templars. Here are three destinations that would be interesting for future games.

American Civil War

Assassin’s Creed III was set during the American Revolution where players took on the main character Connor, as he played a key part in the American Revolution. That game ended with Connor seeing slaves being sold at a port, but never fully investigated that story beat. But what if the game went back to another major war period in the United States? The Civil War would be that era.

Imagine taking up a character that was an escaped slave, fighting against the Templars and in for freedom. Think about some of the other characters that could show up. Missions alongside Harriet Tubman. Meeting with Frederick Douglas. Helping Nat Turner, etc. There are several interesting angles that could be used as the backdrop of this game.

Maya Civilization

The Mayan Civilization thrived throughout Mexico, reportedly starting in the late 200s through the late 1600s. There are still areas today filled with structures from that civilization. Mexico hasn’t been explored within the Assassin’s Creed series, so imagine doing it with the Mayan Civilization. It would be a captivating test to see how the story is told and what lengths can be reached when uncovering the unknown of this civilization.

Moreso, one of the biggest mysteries of humanity is the disappearance of the Mayan people. While there’s the belief that the group migrated and probably assimilated into other groups in the continent at the time, there is also the thought that aliens played some part in their vanishing and the fall of the empire. Assassin’s Creed was once strongly based on extraterrestrial action, so this setting could take the game right back in that direction.

Present Day World

While one of the big attractions of Assassin’s Creed is going back in time for fictional tacks on history, there’s also a story that could be told in the present day. The earlier iterations of the series did feature some playable elements in modern times, but that has come to an end. Imagine a game entirely set in this century. Instead of being restricted to one area, the entire world could be a part of the game, as hoping on a flight wouldn’t be an issue. Watch Dogs attempted to bring Assassin’s Creed to the present day, but that was a different series and much of the essence was lost. It’s time for AC to modernize a bit with a game in this time period.
