35 – Dewpider/Araquanid

Type: Water/Bug

Classification: Water Bubble Pokemon

Dewpider Pokedex:  It crawls onto the land in search of food. Its water bubble allows it to breathe and protects its soft head. When it comes across enemies or potential prey, this Pokémon smashes its water-bubble-covered head into them.

Araquanid Pokedex: It delivers headbutts with the water bubble on its head. Small Pokémon get sucked into the bubble, where they drown. Despite what its appearance suggests, it cares for others. If it finds vulnerable, weak Pokémon, it protectively brings them into its water bubble.

Explanation: In the game, I encountered Araquanid before I saw a Dewpider, and yikes, was it terrifying. At first sight, it’s reminiscent of some terrifying, many-legged alien. It’s okay, though! Araquanid is just a terrifying, many-legged killer bug that drowns small Pokemon that it wants to eat, and also accidentally drowns small Pokemon that it thinks it is taking care of. Great, right?

While scary and certainly alarming if you encounter the evolution, Dewpider and Araquanid, both of them are just like horror versions of Surskit and Masquerain, also Water/Bug types that call to mind a water spider. There’s also a much better Water/Bug type combo in this generation, leaving Dewpider and Araquanid looking a bit on the gratuitous side.
