1 – Mimikyu

Type: Ghost/Fairy

Classification: Disguise Pokemon

Pokedex: Its actual appearance is unknown. A scholar who saw what was under its rag was overwhelmed by terror and died from the shock. A lonely Pokémon, it conceals its terrifying appearance beneath an old rag so it can get closer to people and other Pokémon. After going to all the effort of disguising itself, its neck was broken. Whatever is inside is probably unharmed, but it’s still feeling sad. If its neck is broken or its rag torn during an attack, it works through the night to patch it.

Explanation: If you didn’t follow Mimikyu’s official reveal or somehow missed the myriad of in-game hints, let me tell you a story. Mimikyu is a lonely little ghost who is afraid to show himself to humans, and yet is jealous of all the attention Pikachu gets. It’s so jealous, it made itself a little Pikachu costume so it could go out around humans and hopefully be loved just as much as they love Pikachu. It’s so jealous, that it tries to trap you during the Ghost Trial by luring you into a room full of Pikachu drawings and then giggling maniacally until, using the AR feature, you physically turn around and get an actual jump scare from the thing behind you. It’s a brilliant design moment and the perfect entrance for Mimikyu.

Sure, it’s all a little spooky, but the pure genius of recognizing that our rampant obsession with Pikachu may have gone too far and then turning it into a Pokemon just astounds me. While I’m craving Mimikyu merchandise so I can love it as much as Pika, somehow it might be more ironic and appropriate if Mimikyu never got plushes and T-shirts and the full regalia in an official capacity. Ironic, yes, but heartbreaking as well. All it wants is to be loved!
