8 – Wishiwashi

Type: Water

Classification: Small Fry Pokemon

Pokedex: When it’s in trouble, its eyes moisten and begin to shine. The shining light attracts its comrades, and they stand together against their enemies. It’s awfully weak and notably tasty, so everyone is always out to get it. As it happens, anyone trying to bully it receives a painful lesson. Weak Wishiwashi school together to concentrate their power. Their united force makes them the demon of the sea, feared near and far. At their appearance, even Gyarados will flee. When they team up to use Water Gun, its power exceeds that of Hydro Pump.

Explanation: When I first saw Wishiwashi, I was rather unimpressed. Even if the idea of a bunch of tiny fish schooling together into something more powerful was a cool one (and visually impressive on-screen to boot!), Wishiwashi’s stupid sad eyes just felt so pathetic. There was no way this was going to be a viable Pokemon for anything.

Boy was I wrong.

When Wishiwashi schools, it gets crazy-strong. Its stats take a huge leap and its abilities blow most other Pokemon right out of the water it’s swimming it. As a Totem Pokemon, Wishiwashi is even stronger, and the Pokemon it summons to help heal it, too, making its fight one of the most difficult Totem battles you’ll face in your journey. Wishiwashi’s design is excellent because it does its job: convincing you to dismiss this Pokemon as a non-threat before it swooshes in and demolishes your whole team.
