41 – Togedemaru

Type: Electric/Steel

Classification: Roly-Poly Pokemon

Pokedex: The spiny fur on its back is normally at rest. When this Pokémon becomes agitated, its fur stands on end and stabs into its attackers. The long hairs on its back act as lightning rods. The bolts of lightning it attracts are stored as energy in its electric sac.

Explanation: While it remains a tradition to include a Pikachu-clone in every generation, I truly felt that Mimikyu did just fine on its own without the help of an actual electric type. Togedemaru, a little electric/steel hedgehog thing, doesn’t fulfill any particularly interesting niche. It appears only in specific places, and only fairly late in the game, so only people who can’t resist its fluffy wiles are likely to seek it out. It doesn’t even learn any steel-type moves without help from TMs, and its steel-typing doesn’t make an awful lot of sense with its Pokedex entry, either.

Togedemaru isn’t an outright bad Pokemon, it’s just highly unimpressive in a world already populated with adorable electric mouse-like creatures. It’s competing with Alolan Raichu for the electric spot on my team. It’s not going to win that dual of cuteness.
