32 – Bruxish

Type: Water/Psychic

Classification: Gnash Teeth Pokemon

Pokedex: When it unleashes its psychic power from the protuberance on its head, the grating sound of grinding teeth echoes through the area. It stuns its prey with psychokinesis and then grinds them to mush with its strong teeth. Even Shellder’s shell is no match for it.

Explanation: Bruxish is sort of awkward and clownish for this generation’s quintessential fish Pokemon, but get a load of this: Bruxish is based on an actual fish native to the Hawaiian islands. Its common name is the Reef Triggerfish, but its proper name is the best: humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa. Its name is longer than the fish itself!

When you take into account its real world basis, the fact that Bruxish looks like a kissing clown becomes a bit more forgivable. As a battle-ready Pokemon, it’s forgettable, but once you encounter one in the wild, you’ll be certain to remember its bright, colorful appearance. Bruxish is but one of many Pokemon based on real-world, Hawaiian-native animals, where Hawaii’s distinct ecosystem provides an abundance of weirdness for Pokemon designs.
