EA purchased Popcap Games in 2011, getting the rights to the Plants vs. Zombies tower defense series. In true EA fashion, it then took the series in directions no one asked for, including third-person shooters. But after years and years of doing that, EA is finally giving us an HD remaster of the original hit game that started the franchise.
Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted adds all-new game modes to help Crazy Dave keep those zombies out of his abode. Brand new features include:
- Team up with a friend for local co-op or play against each other in PvP mode for a chaotic, unforgettable adventure.
- Test your brainz in Cloudy Day Mode, a brand new game feature limiting sunlight and planting abilities for a unique challenge.
- Enjoy classic minigames along with the series’ signature lane-based defense mode.
- Discover a treasure trove of never-before-seen Plants vs. Zombies archive content to understand how Plants vs. Zombies took over the world!
Perhaps the biggest change is Rest in Peace, a roguelike mode that gives limited resources to fend off the zombie hordes. It includes permadeath, so failure sends you right back to the beginning to try setting your up defenses again. As I said, I've hated a lot of the detours EA has taken with this franchise over the years. But a strategic roguelike mode feels like it's in the spirit of the original game.
Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted will be available October 23 on the EA app, Epic Games Store, Steam, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 systems, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. Pre-order today to receive a Peashooter 8-bit skin to take your game to the next level.
