Pro wrestlers work their entire careers to become popular enough to appear at Wrestlemania, to be in storylines with the likes of John Cena, The Rock, and Cody Rhodes. Many dream of appearing in WWE 2K games. But celebrities like Travis Scott get to cut in line because WWE will do anything to get mainstream media coverage.
Scott walked right off the street into a program with Rhodes, The Rock, and John Cena. He was also reportedly the special celebrity guest slated to appear in WWE 2K25's New Wave Pack. But things went really bad really fast.
The rapper, inexperienced in wrestling, accidentally busted Rhodes' eardrum at WWE Elimination Chamber. This led to all kinds of heat throughout the industry. Both Scott and The Rock disappeared from the high-profile storyline. Scott was last involved helping a heel John Cena defeat Rhodes to win his 17th world title at Wrestlemania 41.
Paul Heyman, appearing on Ariel Helwani's podcast, said "it fell apart and we moved forward." WWE being the business that is, Heyman didn't rule out seeing Scott in the ring again at some point. As far as the reports that Scott was hated in the locker room?
"Do I know the accuracy of it? Haven't heard Travis' version of it," Heyman said.
As the relationship between Scott and WWE went south, we heard from 2K that we'd get more info on the celebrity guest later. Now it turns out there will be no celebrity guest, and in September we'll get El Grande Americano as a replacement. Of course, we could have had him in May. Although the fake luchador is portrayed by a cast of WWE stars currently including Ludwig Kaiser and Chad Gable, his WWE 2K25 incarnation will have a brand new moveset.
It's the second straight year WWE 2K has fumbled with celebrity DLC that the majority of fans didn't want to begin with. In 2024, Pat McAfee and several of his ESPN cohosts appeared in widely maligned DLC.
