Overwatch's most toxic comp lives again in Marvel Rivals
By Brian Allen
Marvel Rivals is crushing it right out of the gate, with more than 10 million players signing on since its Dec. 6 launch.
Marvel Rivals has no role queue right now, even in its recently launched competitive mode. Because of the similarities between it and Overwatch, it was only a matter of time before people tried one of the broken team compositions from the olden days.
GOATS was a team comp consisting of three tanks and three supports, who would then just walk onto the point and bully the opposing team. It was extremely effective but not a whole lot of fun to watch. Activision was heavily trying to push Overwatch as an esport, and established a role queue to try and make things fun again.
So far, there's no word on whether NetEase Games will follow suit with some sort of role lock. Right now, the game is in a beautiful state of unbalance. It's ridiculous that Jeff the Land Shark is perhaps the most powerful hero in a game full of Norse gods and omega-level mutants.
But that's a large part of what makes this game so much fun. It's the Saints Row to Overwatch's GTA. It is not taking itself too seriously, and I love it for that. I cannot wait to see what NetEase Games does with the inevitable Deadpool appearance.
Rivals is free-to-play and available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X.
