Of course Dr. Disrespect is showing up on Rumble, the internet's armpit
By Brian Allen
In a normal society, a 42-year-old man who admitted to inappropriate conversations with an underage girl would just be shunned, even if he didn't suffer any legal penalty. But in this era of social media, there exists a safety net where all the worst people can avoid the consequences of their actions.
That place is Rumble, and disgraced former Twitch and YouTube star Dr. Disrespect has set up shop over there. He's even getting an equity stake in the platform. Dr. Disrespect made his first appearance on Dec. 2 and more than 40,000 viewers decided improper sexual chatting with an underage girl was not a deal breaker for them.
As a gamer myself, I'm usually happy to see us reach the lofty celebrity status typically reserved for athletes. I hate we've seen gaming content become so popular that guys like Disrespect have the same ability to walk through charges a pro football player might get. Hopefully we're not headed towards streaming's O.J. Simpson moment.
Among the other luminaries on Rumble is Russell Brand, whose career evaporated over sexual assault allegations. I can't stress how disturbing it is that there's a social media network whose whole brand is platforming people too toxic to work anywhere else. The only thing more disturbing is that against all odds, it appears to be a good business move.
There's no denying that he's talented, building up such a huge following doesn't come by accident. But there are countless streamers just as talented, many more so, that don't come with this dude's baggage. If social media and the celebrities it creates aren't going to be better, than us viewers have to be.
