Marvel Rivals' best character is a hybrid of three Overwatch heroes
By Brian Allen
Many of Marvel Rivals' characters have a counterpart in Overwatch, or in some cases are a combination of characters. For example, Star-Lord has a movement style not unlike Tracer's, and an auto-aiming ultimate that brings Soldier 76 to mind. But the Winter Soldier's bionic arm allows him to crib from three different characters in Blizzard's shooter.
His pistol functions much like Cassidy's with devastating damage done by headshots. It carries only three shots, but using any of his special moves reloads it. Cassidy's combat roll performs the same function in Overwatch. Weaving this in with the Soldier's other skills keeps the damage flowing.
Winter Soldier's Trooper's Fist functions like Doomfist's uppercut, which was so powerful Overwatch ended up removing it from his kit entirely. Marvel Rivals has no such concerns. Right now, it's allowing several broken things as part of its vibe.
Still, the launch potential now is as crazy as it was during Doomfist's nightmarish heyday. As with Doomfist, the uppercut is also handy to use as a repositioning tool. Soldier's Ultimate, Kraken Impact, is essentially a reusable form of Doomfist's Meteor Strike that marks the targets on lowest health. If you kill a target during this mark, you get another Impact. It's not hard for the assassin to wipe an entire team with this.
Completing the trifecta is a Roadhog-style pull known as Bionic Hook. It can reel in multiple targets if Bucky lines them up properly. Again, this is a move that has been nerfed and readjusted several times during Overwatch's long history.
Winter Soldier is packing several moves that have been nerfed in Overwatch and one that was just removed outright. And that's not even all of them. He also gets a slow in the form of Tainted Voltage, an electrical orb.
It's fitting that a guy rebuilt by Hydra to become the ultimate weapon can do seemingly anything in Marvel Rivals. A good Winter Soldier can win the game almost singlehandedly.
