Madden 26 will be one of the all-time great sports games

Let me be clear, I never seriously believed the NFL was going to take Madden's exclusive license away. We have seen zero evidence that any other publisher is ready to deliver a new NFL title worth your $70, and the league knows this. But hey, if any pressure was applied, I'm grateful. Everything I'm seeing so far indicates this is the year Madden stops taking the eternal "step in the right direction" and actually crosses into the end zone.

You Can't Run Away From the DNA

The coach and the quarterback are the two most important people on the field, and Madden 26 promises to make them feel that way. QB DNA includes more than 500 animations and a series of traits to make signal callers play like their real world counterparts. Many are positive, such as Set Up Time. QBs with this trait will always look to set their feet before attempting the throw.

As any Cleveland Browns fan can sadly tell you, not all QB traits are good ones. Negative traits include Seeing Ghosts, which causes a player to force a pass to his first read for three plays after being sacked.

Coach DNA recognizes that great minds do not all think alike. Detroit Lions Coach Dan Campbell will be far more likely to go for it on fourth down. The coach suggestions will also reflect the different ways they call the game. In some modes, you'll be able to unlock new plays through leveling up your coach.

Weathering the Storm

Previous Maddens have had weather, but not any tangible weather effects. Footage we've seen so far showed receiver icons vanishing in the snow, making life tough for the signal caller trying to find them. Good luck running your money play if you can't see your tight end.

Extremely cold weather can even affect player stamina, causing them to tire faster than they would in warm climates. Just don't tell Diontae Johnson.

The Old College Try

The ghost of NFL 2K will always be floating around Madden's stadiums. But the real competition came from in-house, as College Football 25 played to rave reviews. Frustrated Madden fans have been calling for the franchise to consider taking a year off to evaluate some things and come back fresh. In the current climate, that is never going to happen. College Football was forced to take a decade off while the NCAA figured out what to do about paying athletes.

The resulting product came back reinvigorated and was one of the bestselling titles, sports or otherwise of 2024. The Madden franchise will benefit from all their innovations. One of CFB 25's new features, Wear and Tear, will be front and center in Madden this year. As I've mentioned, it wasn't perfect. But we don't want our sports games to be afraid to try new things. Sure, sometimes you get the QB vision cone (shudder), but sometimes you get Ultimate Team and change the way the game is played forever.

These are just a few of the reasons I've chosen to believe Madden 26's considerable marketing hype. We'll know soon enough if these were just more buzzwords.
