In spite of the $200 million-plus dumpster fire that was Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Warner Bros. is reportedly ready to dip its toes back into live-service waters. A listing for an executive producer position at WB Games Montreal is looking for someone to "lead the development of a high-quality AAA game based on one of the iconic IPs from the vast Warner Bros. and DC Comics catalog."
There are rumors running rampant that this game might be a hero shooter in the vein of Overwatch or Marvel Rivals. The way things are going for Warner, them being the last hero shooter into the pool sounds about right.
Look, I am a Marvel Rivals enjoyer. But it's worth noting that the game has lost 80 percent of its player base on Steam since its 2024 launch. It's not uncommon for games to lose players over time, and since Microsoft and Sony don't share their numbers we don't know how many players they have.
But those are numbers that would concern me if I were about to launch a hero shooter into the group with Overwatch, Valorant, Rivals, and more. With access to iconic heroes such as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, it shouldn't be this hard to make great video games. And yet here we are with Warner.
You know what would be awesome, Warner? A good Superman game. It's a crying shame that we've basically never had that for the greatest hero in comic books. Just a thought here.
