Insomniac Games' Wolverine has had an interesting journey since its first reveal at the 2021 PlayStation Showcase. The 2023 cyberattack leaked a lot of information about the hotly anticipated game, leading to fears it might be shelved outright.
But there is way too much money to be made from a Wolverine game for Insomniac or Sony to get out of that line of work. On the Insider Gaming podcast, Tom Henderson said he expects a new Wolverine trailer soon, either at State of Play later this month or at The Game Awards in December.
"So, it is done. It obviously was delayed to quite a big extent,” Henderson said. “From what I’ve managed to hear, from people working on the project, obviously, the ransomware attack and all the game leaking is one thing, but then the emotional strain that it places on people when you have all of your information leaked, like your address, social security numbers, and all that kind of stuff, is massive.”
“So that obviously delayed the game as well. But from a few playtesters I’ve been speaking to, they think the game looks fantastic. So that’s good news, and fingers crossed we get to see a release date in a couple of weeks’ time.”
The Spider-Man games have been among the industry's best, and huge sellers for Sony. It's hard to imagine a scenario in which Wolverine doesn't join them in the pantheon of PlayStation hits.
Though the character is often depicted as a loner, most of his best work in comics and video games has been alongside other Marvel heroes. Games such as Midnight Suns and the Ultimate Alliance titles have been some of the best titles featuring the Ol' Canucklehead.
One notable exception was the X-Men Origins: Wolverine game, which was far, far better than the film that spawned it. It's well worth picking up if you've never played it.
