It's no secret that Highguard has been in trouble since that awkward reveal at The Game Awards. After getting 100,000 concurrent players in its first few hours on Steam, it lost 90 percent of that player base in the next 24 hours. But Wildlight Entertainment teased an important update, and now it's here. For a limited time, Highguard is adding a 5v5 mode.
This addresses one of the biggest complaints, that the maps were simply too large for the small amount of players in a game. Imagine maps the size of Apex Legends, but with only six people on them.
We heard the feedback,” Highguard said on X. “For the weekend, we are experimenting with a 5v5 Raid Mode. This is a separate playlist and not meant to replace 3’s. 3v3 Raids are still there for people who enjoy it! The lobby has been updated to allow for parties of 5 while the mode is live.”
At this point, it's absolutely worth a shot. I've gotten a few hours in and I really enjoy the combat, once the combat starts. But the first two stages are essentially armoring up for the final battle. It would be more interesting if there were some kind of interaction during the gearing up phase, and perhaps these changes will provide that.
Highguard has mentioned the game wasn't built with 5v5 in mind, so there may be some issues that crop up. But I'm sure they realized if they didn't do something, the issue that crops up will be another dead live service game.
