Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is an upcoming real-time strategy game based on HBO’s Game of Thrones. The studio responsible for the development is PlaySide Studios and it is published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Currently, the game is planned to be released on PC via Steam in 2026, and here's everything we know about the game so far.
The violently intricate realm of Westeros is the focus of the game
It allows players to rewrite Game of Thrones with alternate outcomes, recreating many iconic moments in the world of Westeros, and among those options, players will have memorable places like The Wall, King's Landing, and Harrenhal. Game director Ryan McMahon noted that "This time, you’re not watching Game of Thrones, you’re playing it," and in doing so, aims for players to immerse themselves in changing the fate of the Seven Kingdoms.
Players can choose to lead one of four factions, each with their own unique heroes to command, each with their own armies and asymmetrical strategies. House Stark can be identified by stoic leadership, with steadfast allies. Perhaps there will be leadership characters such as Robb Stark. House Lannister and their sizable empires use their wealth and cunning to outwit people like Tywin Lannister, Cersei, Jaime, etc.; and the Targaryens are dragon-focused, led by Daenerys Targaryen with the Unsullied and dragons like Drogon.
Players will enjoy the Night King faction that commands the Army of the Dead, composed of White Walkers, wights, giants, and mystical forces, allowing a style of gaming unlike any other faction. Players will take command of a variety of units that include infantry, cavalry, siege engines, giants, and dragons, allowing players to battle in a truly epic manner.
Revolves around the domination of the Seven Kingdoms
The game not only focuses on military strategy but also on diplomacy, alliances, and deception! The game allows for distinctly different playstyles for each faction via unique mechanics (Stark chose military conquest, Lannister opted for political, and Night King launched a supernatural invasion). The cinematic trailer and description feature some of our old friends like Jon Snow, Jaime Lannister, and the Night King.
Revealed at Summer Game Fest 2025, the trailer includes epic battles including, Daenerys and Drogon burning soldiers while the Unsullied storm House Stark's troops at Harrenhal; Night King bringing Jon Snow back as a wight, allowing for different reimaginings of the story; and dragon falling and chaos across Westeros, implying the game's high-stakes warfare ambition.
The reveal trailer features Charles Dance back behind the mic as Tywin Lannister and reiterates the key focus of the game, altering the fate of Westeros. Video game development from shared IP is a specialty of PlaySide Studios, the developer of licensed IPs such as The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners.
The developer released a diary video, after the reveal, titled "The War Begins," where Ryan McMahon describes the vision for a "classic RTS" that will have deep tactical and narrative layers. The developer's goal is to create for both true RTS aficionados and "Game of Thrones" fans, drawing inspiration from A Song of Ice and Fire and HBO's Game of Thrones.
Described to be a "premium" RTS
Players will be able to weave in and out of the politics, rally bannermen, and pick sides. All of this reflects the classic scheming of Game of Thrones. It is far distinct from other Game of Thrones games, which were primarily all mobile titles or had some basic military imitation of the board game Battles of Westeros. Warner Bros. seems to be banking on a "premium" rights push for a Game of Thrones RTS.
No pricing or specific system details seem to be available. However, players can wishlist the game via Steam.
