As some of our more eagle-eyed readers have already noticed, App Trigger has now begun scoring our reviews. This is a philosophical change for me personally. This year, I loved playing Final Fantasy Tactics as much as I did 30 years ago. I loved playing College Football 26. Did I love it five percent more or less than FF Tactics? It's like trying to pick my favorite child. I believe video games are art, so ranking them reminds me a lot of this scene from Dead Poets Society, one of my favorite movies:
Don't worry, I won't be ripping any of our blog posts out. They don't make noise when you do that, it's not nearly as therapeutic as ripping paper. But I'm here to serve you, the readers of our content. We are in the era of Metacritic, I cite it at least once daily myself. Like it or not, we are in the business of watching numbers go up, whether it's our mage's power levels of the amount of perfect review scores a game receives.
I've heard stories about promotions being tied to these metrics. Look, the bottom line is that people want this review information and they want it quantified. As games reach the $80 barrier, I understand that five percent of liking it more is more important than it has ever been. Above all, it's my job to give our readers what they want. If you want review scores, we're going to give them to you.
If I have learned anything in transitioning from newspapers to the Internet, it's that you can always Internet a little bit better. I'm excited to see all our favorite numbers go straight up.
