Best Nintendo Switch Games #29 – World of Goo

Developer: 2D Boy

Synopsis: When pipes mysteriously appear throughout the world, bunches of strange balls of goo awaken and begin to, inexplicably, travel toward the pipes. By controlling the Goo Balls, you must build structures from them to cross gaps and reach the pipes with certain numbers of those Goo Balls in tow. New Goo Balls will appear with each new chapter of the game with new abilities. Another game mode, World of Goo Corporation, allows you to compete online to build the tallest tower of Goo Balls.

Why it’s one of the best Nintendo Switch games: The strange dystopian nature of World of Goo winds up being part of its attraction–the rest is in the way the different Goo-stacking puzzles engage you. It doesn’t hurt, either, that each level has its own unique aesthetic, themes, and music to keep each world fresh. World of Goo is a fine example of difficulty progression in a puzzle game gone right, as it gently teaches you while you play and ramps things up carefully, leaving you feeling brilliant by the end.
