Best Nintendo Switch Games #33 – ARMS

Developer: Nintendo

Synopsis: One day, a bunch of people woke up to find they had springs for arms. It just happened, I guess. Some of those people decided to use these devices, which they cleverly called “ARMS,” to fight each other for fun and money, and thus ARMS was born. Cue a bunch of puns about this game having legs.

ARMS is a fighter where you can play either with a controller or by holding the Joy-Cons and punching. Fighters can execute combos and moves based on the types of ARMS they have attached, which can be customized to suit your playstyle. Online and local multiplayer modes are available, as well as a single-player campaign.

Why it’s one of the best Nintendo Switch games: Like Splatoon brought the shooter genre to folks who didn’t play it, ARMS is here to bring some goofy fun to fighting games and entice a new, perhaps unfamiliar audience. It remains deep enough for seasoned fighters to get into the game as well, and while pros will desire the precision of a controller, ARMS is darn fun to play on Joy-Cons, too. Simply being fun to play seems a strong enough advantage, but when you consider the short, shallow single-player campaign and the relatively low number of characters, ARMS might run out of steam fairly early on if Nintendo doesn’t keep up the updates. A variety of game modes will help keep us occupied until then, fortunately.
