There has been a Mass Effect-sized hole in our hearts for a long time. The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is a space opera set in the world of the hit series of novels and TV show, and it has people talking. Owlcat Games, who you may know from the excellent Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader, has the helm of this spaceship. At last week's New Game+ Showcase, we got an exciting look at what they've been up to and a developer interview.
You don't play as any of the characters from the TV show, Owlcat wants you to tell your own story. Select from Earther, Martian or Belter (someone born in the asteroid belt or outer planets) and then take command of the most advanced ship in the cosmos.
In RPG tradition, your choices will determine what your crewmates think about following you. It won't be out front or black-and-white. According to Owlcat, there aren't "Clementine will remember that" moments, so to speak. You may not learn the impact your choices had until much later, when it's far too late to choose a different path.
Your companions will have their own goals, successes, and failures. And yes, you can romance them. What's a good space opera without a little romance? Of course, the wrong decision can kill them. It's also not a space opera unless there's a realistic chance somebody doesn't leave planetside.
Osiris Reborn's combat will have three levels. There will be firefights featuring cover, during which you can use your combat skills and various tech weapons. That third level is your teammates, to whom you can give instructions that hopefully turn the tide of battle in your favor.
We don't have a release date yet, but this is one we will definitely be keeping an eye on.
