Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is essentially Far Cry, but make it Avatar. That said, the Far Cry formula works for a reason and the game, like the movies it represents, is so pretty. It's receiving an update to help promote Avatar: Fire and Ash, the latest sequel in the Avatar franchise.

The update will allow players to experience the game from a third-person perspective, and adds a New Game + mode. It also lays the foundation for From the Ashes, a Dec. 19 expansion based on the new film. It takes place after the movie's events, and will cast players as So'lek, a Navi warrior seeking revenge on the traitorous Ash clan, who have allied with the RDA.

So'lek was ambushed and left for the dead by the Ash clan, and awakens to a world in flames with his family scattered. The RDA, villains of the Avatar series, know pillaging Pandora will be much easier if the Na'vi don't resist. They've been trying to make allies and apparently have succeeded here.

Ubisoft's adaptations of Far Cry are not always the most creative stuff, but it's hard to argue any film franchise fits into its brand of assassination and exploration better than Avatar. Riding on the backs of dragons and taking down battle mechs with weapons crafted from the trees is an undeniably fun experience.

It didn't set the world on fire (no pun intended) back in 2023, but this may be one of those cases where DLC inspires people to give Frontiers of Pandora a second chance. Look at what happened to games like No Man's Sky or Cyberpunk 2077 after they got some more attention from their developers.
