One of the major reasons The Game Awards has a Sports/Racing category is there are not that many racing games released these days. Hopefully in 2026 they'll have some better options. One to watch out for is Screamer, a reboot of a cult classic racer from the 90s. At The Game Awards, we learned this latest version will peel out at unsafe speeds on March 26, 2026.

It's coming to us from Milestone, who crushed it with Hot Wheels Unleashed. In Screamer's innovative control system, the left stick controls steering and the right stick controls drift. Racers will need to manage two gauges as well. One is filled by in-game actions, and will grant speed boosts and shields to vehicles. The other gauge will take advantage of the power-ups you earn from the first gauge, granting two abilities. One causes any car you collide with to explode, the other is an unlimited speed boost until you crash.

While it's a racing title, it is clearly influenced by numerous other genres. The gauge that fills by perfectly timed actions has drawn comparisons to Gears of War's active reload system. The anime- infused storyline is a callback to JRPG storytelling. And going back to racing, hitting other racers with your explosive ability is reminiscient of knocking other cars off the road in the Burnout series.

And by the way, Troy Baker is part of the game's voice cast. Racing is far from my best genre, but I'm incredibly stoked to play this one. The return of Screamer is one to watch in 2026.
