Best Xbox One Games #21 – Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin

Developer: From Software

Synopsis:  A Bearer of the Curse comes from a human that turns Hollow after death, putting his life into a constant state of death and rebirth. To break the curse and bring peace to the land, they must seek the four Great Souls from the kingdom of Drangleic. Furthermore, they shall seek the king in the capital and bring about changes to the cycle of darkness and the light that follows. Lest their task becomes far too easy, large monstrosities await the player throughout their adventure. Various monsters, creatures, bosses, dragons and other players lie in wait, striking at the opportune moment when focus is at its lowest. A certain boss can even summon invaders and team up to join forces and take you down.

Why it’s one of the 50 best Xbox One games: Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin makes several deep changes to the core nature of the original game for the PS3 and Xbox 360 due to a number of factors. Narrative design differences, as well as enemy placement, are just some of the major alterations that fundamentally alter how the game plays. Having a dragon rest in the center of one of the beginning areas takes away everything a traditional DS2 player knows about the game and what to do. It tells a radically opposing story, giving the players options that work well from a gameplay stance.

Furthermore, the entire DLC arc is baked into the story, telling the deeper story that was revealed piecemeal in the first place. That comes on top of a core gameplay service that From Software has only improved upon with age, adding a variety of functions, items, weapons and armor sets to the core experience. Character design improvements, especially concerning the likes of invading NPCs and story interactions with other players, took major leaps forward.
