Best Xbox One Games #29 – Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

Developer: Ubisoft Montreal

Synopsis: Edward Kenway abandons his mundane, workaday life of labor to jump into a major lifestyle change. He seeks the open seas of the Caribbean, off in search of glory and plunder. For the present-day scenario, you are an employee of Abstergo, investigating the prominent sailor-turned-pirate for historical accuracy for an interactive feature film. However, things are not what they seem. Explore the Caribbean islands with a full crew, overcome templars and plunder treasure to your heart’s content.

Why it’s one of the 50 best Xbox One games: Living the free life is one of wonder in a number of ways. There’s no better time than hoisting the sails, setting off on an adventure, and singing a sea chanty with dozens of your closest friends. Expanding upon the naval exploration that AC3 introduced previously, players will enjoy the subtleties of the combat system that warring ship battles will bring.

In a series known to pad its gameplay length with its collect-a-thons, Black Flag‘s setting makes exploration fun. The hidden nooks and crannies of the many islands left to discover are home to buried treasure, bonus shanty songs, rare animals to skin and numerous moments of visual awe. The game’s environmental design makes up for all the “stay close, but not too close, behind two dudes talking to each other” missions that plague the series, and the tropical layout of these islands make for rewarding sneaking missions through the gorgeously flush greenery. It’s easily one of the best launch titles for the 8th generation of consoles.
