Best PS4 Games #43 – The Witness
Developer: Thekla, Inc.
Synopsis: There’s hardly a narrative structure surrounding Jonathan Blow’s The Witness that can’t be summed up thusly; a player explores an island and overcomes hundreds of puzzles in an attempt to reach the final goal within the island’s mountain. Though they have different appearances, most of these puzzles are represented by either localized environmental clues or logical progression, and often require a deep understanding of 2D and 3D spacial awareness. There are over 650 different puzzles at stake over dozens of hours of gameplay.
Why it’s one of the 50 best PS4 games: One can’t help but feel cozy and comfy playing The Witness. Enjoyment is driven from a space of discovery and adversity, especially when overcoming extremely difficult line puzzles. What could have been a mundane, tedious experience is pushed to the side by the gorgeous landscape woven in front of the player. Mysterious lore seeps into said environment, adding depth to a game that focuses on overcoming logical challenges.
There’s a subtle style to The Witness that separates itself from the field. Thankfully it made its way out of development hell without losing the effectiveness that underlying hype over the years tends to place on titles like this.
