Best PS4 Games #45: Yakuza Kiwami

Developer: SEGA

Synopsis: Yakuza Kiwami begins in 1995, with Kazuma Kiryu taking the fall for the murder of the Dojima Family patriarch by the hands of his friend, Akira Nishikiyama. After serving a ten-year prison sentence, the balance of power within the Tojo Clan has shifted, with Nishiki betraying you in his thirst for power. Things have changed in the past decade, and with a mysterious young girl looking for her lost mother amid a sea of Yakuza thugs searching for her, Kiryu is caught in the crossfires for doing the right thing.

Why it’s one of the 50 best PS4 games: With the changes brought forth in this remake, Yakuza Kiwami feels like a completed version of the original PS2 classic. In addition to padding the game’s combat mechanics and adding layers of replayability with its multitude of distractions, the original voice acting makes its way to North American players for the first time.

Plus, the new Majima Everywhere system does a great job at turning Goro Majima into a growing threat potentially lurking around every corner. Yakuza Kiwami does a great job at subverting your expectations, even with a game that serves as the foundation of an impressive franchise.
