Best PS4 Games #46 – I Am Setsuna

Developer: Tokyo RPG Factory

Synopsis: I Am Setsuna tells the story of a young woman named Setsuna whose purpose in life is to appease the gods with a mortal sacrifice. A classic RPG silent protagonist is initially tasked with committing the act, with two fellow party members serving as the guard meant to bring Setsuna to the Last Lands. It is there where the sacrifice should be made to bring peace once more. It plays like Chrono Trigger, down to the team-based skills and abilities.

Why it’s one of the 50 best PS4 games: There is something to be said about Square Enix outright admitting they need to go back to basics, pouring their efforts into creating a studio that harkens back to the golden era of the SNES RPG. I Am Setsuna, with its simplistic, haunting piano-based soundtrack, simple and clean visual aesthetics and classic RPG gameplay mechanics does its best to bring that style back in the 21st century.

Furthermore, this game doesn’t hold your hand with its difficulty. Should you not prepare yourself, like it was a modern game, you could find yourself a significant time away from a save point, facing a Game Over screen. I Am Setsuna tells its own story while marrying traditional RPG elements to create a name for itself and a wonderful promise of what the studio should bring forward into the future.
