Mario is vanilla, white bread platforming that we can gravitate to again and again. More levels of that were necessary for Nintendo to keep adventuring into unknown territory in other titles, like Super Mario 3D Land and their Wii U offerings. New Super Mario Bros. 2 is great just by virtue of meeting our expectations of good platforming, coin collecting, and our favorite plumber.
