Best Nintendo 3DS Games – #4 Shovel Knight
Developer: Yacht Club Games
Release Date: June 26th, 2014
Synopsis: Shovel Knight and Shield were once the bravest adventurers in the land until a cursed amulet stole away Shield Knight and sent Shovel Knight into despair. But when an evil Enchantress and the Order of No Quarter threaten the peace of the land, Shovel Knight must take up his trusty shovel and adventure across the land in a platforming adventure hearkening back to old Metrovania titles, complete with graphics and sound reminiscent of the era.
Why It’s One Of The Best Nintendo Games: Shovel Knight remains to date one of the best examples of Kickstarter campaigns done well. All the elements of Shovel Knight have combined since the start of its fundraising to create a wonderful experience. The idea, a platformer based on old Metroidvanias but with a fresh (and slightly silly) concept, was easily received by an audience who missed the old school gameplay of the consoles they grew up with.
Yacht Club executed their visions effectively–Shovel Knight is both fun to play and replay, and the constant stream of DLC since launch was a welcome reward where so many similar campaigns don’t even reach the stage of a complete game. We contend that the 3DS version of Shovel Knight remains one of the most fun to play due to the dual screen and how comfortable the title seems on a handheld, though we acknowledge that the Nintendo Switch Treasure Trove may give it a run for its giant, sparkling gem money.
