Best Nintendo 3DS Games – #8 Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate

Developer: Capcom

Release Date: February 13th, 2015

Synopsis: Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate lets you step into the shoes of the titular Monster Hunter, who travels out into various environments and fights the powerful monsters that inhabit them for rewards such as currency, buff items, and crafting supplies used to make better and better weapons. The combat is the meat of the gameplay–while your player does not grow in strength, your weapons do as you upgrade them. A total of twelve weapon types are available to swap out and upgrade; each of them excels at a different style of fighting, whether that’s aerial combat, ranged, close quarters, or other different styles. The primary challenge of this, as it is in most Monster Hunter games, is to determine the enemy’s weakness and use a combination of strategy and skill to defeat more and more challenging monsters to glean rewards.

Why It’s One Of The Best Nintendo Games: Easily the best title in the Monster Hunter series, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate polished the combat system established in prior games to glowing, and brought in the online multiplayer to capitalize on that precision so that teams of players could take on the game’s biggest and baddest monsters together. Monster Hunter 4 emphasized 3D movement, making aerial combat a must for several different monster types and offering wall-climbing and the ability to mount monsters to further augment this change.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate does include a storyline to help carry the player through the different environments and ease them into the extreme challenge of the game’s tougher monsters. But, as with previous games, you’ll be eager to get out of town and into the field to try your latest weapon against the big, scary thing with claws just down the road.
