Best Nintendo 3DS Games – #10 – Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice
Developer: Capcom
Release Date: September 8, 2016
Synopsis: Once again, Ace Attorney has you following the titular Phoenix Wright, this time as he journeys to the religious land of Khura’in, where defense attorneys are looked upon with scorn and divination seances are all that are needed to determine a guilty verdict. While visiting his assistant Maya as she completes her Spirit Medium training, Phoenix accidentally ends up defending a client, with his own fate tied to the accused. If he cannot gain an “innocent” verdict, both of their heads are on the chopping block.
You’ll also step into the shoes of young Apollo Justice back in the states, where he partners with Athena Cykes to solve cases in a more familiar and traditional manner.
Why It’s One Of The Best Nintendo Games: What Dual Destinies stumbled over, Spirit of Justice mends. It adds just enough novel gameplay to the tried and true Ace Attorney formula to keep things fresh. While in Khura’in, you’ll use Divination Seances to glimpse a victim’s final moments. Textual queues clue you in as to the sights, sounds, smells, and feelings of the victim, indicating which are felt the strongest. Phoenix will use this, along with your usual testimonials and other tools, to uncover the truth and get that innocent verdict you know the accused deserves. Other series staples, such as Athena’s Widget, become important when playing Apollo’s side of the story.
The polished gameplay is well-supported by the characteristic, goofy writing that the series is famous for. Capcom packed Spirit of Justice with punny names, witty banter, and over-the-top witnesses as usual. The mix of cold, calculating logic and absurd scenarios will have you chortling in even the most apparently tense situations–with no objections to be made.
