Best Nintendo 3DS Games – #20 Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS)

Developer: Atlus

Release Date: July 16th, 2013

Synopsis: Main character Flynn, along with three of his friends, has just become a samurai, a warrior who fights and controls demons. Then, disaster strikes. A mysterious Black Samurai appears distributing cursed books that turn their readers into demons. As Flynn works to find a way to defeat this strange enemy, he must use his abilities to recruit demons by negotiating with them in some way, and use them to battle other demons and enemies. Battles are turn-based with the added twist of turns being added or taken away based on whether a hit was landed or not. Demons can be leveled up, evolved, or fused together to grow more powerful in battle, and can be traded via the 3DS StreetPass system.

Why It’s One Of The Best Nintendo Games: Shin Megami Tensei’s returning demon systems remain strong in their own right, with helpful hints available for those new to the series and a gentle enough difficulty curve for most of the game. The over 400 unique recruitable demons provide an interesting twist on the “catch em all” mentality promoted by Pokemon and Yo-Kai Watch in their negotiation systems where you can bribe, flatter, or threaten the demon to join you. It’s the storyline that is the true draw to any Shin Megami Tensei game, though, and IV does not disappoint in its intricacies and urgency. Decisions made throughout the game influence which of three endings you can get, and each has at least one gut-wrenching twist that may make playing the other optional routes more tantalizing.
