Best Nintendo 3DS Games – #31 Mario & Luigi Dream Team

Developer: AlphaDream, Good-Feel

Release Date: August 11th, 2013

Synopsis: While on vacation at Pi’illo Island, Mario and Luigi uncover a plot by Bowser and the bat king Antasma to obtain the Dream Stone, which would grant them endless wishes and surely cause disaster for both Pi’illo Island and the Mushroom Kingdom. Similar gameplay from prior entries in the Mario & Luigi series returns, including controlling each brother with a different button and the combined might of Bros. Attacks. Dream Team’s primary gimmick is the existence of a Dream World where Mario joins Dreamy Luigi to interact with and overcome various obstacles called Luiginary Works. This involves use of the touchscreen to perform actions such as tickling Luigi’s nose to make him sneeze and blow blocks out of the way, or to take command of a stack of Luigis called a Luiginoid to progress.

Why It’s One Of The Best Nintendo Games: Arguably the best Mario & Luigi title yet, Dream Team perfected the systems already in place from previous entries while adding touches of its own in the form of the dream world. The use of the 3DS and all its parts (touchscreen, gyro sensor, dual screens) to manipulate the environment gave the game added flavor and would become a staple for future games, such as Paper Jam. Dream Team’s primary downfall was its slow introduction with far too many tutorials, but once the game got rolling, Mario and Luigi’s adventures in Pi’illo Island became a story to remember.
