Best Nintendo 3DS Games – #32 Bravely Second: End Layer

Developer: Silicon Studio

Release Date: April 15th, 2016

Synopsis: Bravely Second: End Layer is the sequel to the critically acclaimed Bravely Default, and returns the player to the world of Luxendarc to join a cast of heroes both new and returning to save Pope Agnes Oblige from the mysterious Kaiser Oblivion and his armies. Yew Geneolgia, the main character, is joined by Magnolia Arch and two other friends on their adventure through towns and dungeons both familiar and new. Twelve new job asterisks are introduced to spice up the turn-based battle system (along with eighteen returning jobs), and the Brave/Default system makes a comeback as well, enabling players to risk everything in battle or take a more defensive approach to save their attacks. The game also uses the StreetPass system to restore Magnolia’s hometown of Fort Lune, just as its predecessor did with Norende.

Why It’s One Of The Best Nintendo Games: We loved Bravely Second. Though Nintendo’s offerings lately have been fewer and far between, the RPGs this year have been stellar, with this title being no exception. Bravely Second strikes a wonderful balance between old, familiar places and characters to make the player feel right at home, and new adventures to keep them interested. Yew and friends are a charming bunch, laughing (and eating) their way out of sticky situations while saving appropriate thematic gravity for the darker moments of the story.

Of course, it being Bravely, there’s plenty of meta-moments nearer the middle and end of the game that may make your jaw drop. Since we’re sure to see a Bravely Third at some point in the future, Bravely Second is a must-play for anyone who loved the first game.
