Best Nintendo 3DS Games – #33 Hyrule Warriors

Developer: Omega Force, Team Ninja

3DS Release Date: March 25th, 2016

Synopsis: With their powers combined, Dynasty Warriors and The Legend of Zelda are Hyrule Warriors, a hack and slash title populated with characters from Hyrule. In Legend Mode, a sorceress named Cia is manipulated into resurrecting Ganondorf, and summons monsters from all the various space-time realities of Hyrule–but the heroes show up, too. Link, Impa, and Lana each lead campaigns to different realities of Hyrule, fighting their way through hordes of monsters using each character’s unique abilities, and recruiting new friends along the way from all the various Legend of Zelda franchises.

Combat is augmented by each character’s abilities, choices of weapon, and items found along the way. Adventure and Challenge modes are also available, asking the player to complete specific objectives on a Hyrule map in the former, and collect as many rupees as possible in the latter.

Why It’s One Of The Best Nintendo Games: It’s not often that we get a really solid spin-off of sorts with Legend of Zelda, so it’s always a nice change of pace for fans of both genres to experience the combined might of a crossover. Hyrule Warriors’ combat shone with all the polish of a good Dynasty Warriors game, and the variety of possible fighting styles and combinations was praiseworthy, especially in light of all the new characters added both as DLC in the release of the 3DS version. While cutting through endless hordes of enemies as Link or Midna or Ganon sounds as though it would get boring after an hour or two, Hyrule Warriors maintains its momentum well into the campaign and after–certainly enough to warrant its handheld counterpart.
