The Super Mario Bros. Movie was the second biggest box office hit of 2023, outperformed only by Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.

The CG-animated adaptation of the beloved and wildly popular Nintendo franchise grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide. While it didn’t fare too well with critics, it was a massive hit with audiences.

For the past couple of months, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been available to stream exclusively on Peacock, but soon it will head to Netflix. Read on to find out when!

When is The Super Mario Bros. Movie streaming on Netflix?

Announced earlier this week, Netflix confirmed that The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be coming to the streaming service on December 3.

This may come as a surprise to some as Universal Pictures distributed the film, but it’s actually part of a deal that Netflix and Universal inked back in 2021. Under the terms of the deal, films form Illumination and DreamWorks Animation comet o Netflix after a four-month exclusivity window on Peacock.

Inspired by Nintendo’s video game franchise, The Super Mario Bros. Movie tells an origin story of struggling plumbers Mario and Luigi, two Italian-American brothers, who are transported to an alternate world and become entangled in a battle to save Mushroom Kingdom from the invasion of Bowser and the Koopas.

It wasn’t the most original of stories, but the humor was on point and it was just an overall enjoyable film. Not only was it fun for kids, but it featured plenty of references that even older fans of the video game franchise would enjoy.

The film did receive a bit of backlash for its casting of Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario, but I feel he did a perfectly fine job voicing the iconic character.

Although a sequel still hasn’t been confirmed, the success of the film would certainly warrant one. The ending also strongly alluded that a sequel would feature the beloved character of Yoshi.
