02) Boosting Spin Jump

Yeah, that’s right. Number two on this list is boring as hell and you’re going to have to deal with it but I’ll be damned if this isn’t one of the most useful things in the game.

Boosting Spin Jump takes the spin boost from previous Mario games and amps it up to the point where it’s practically a double jump. I cannot TELL you how quickly this ability got me through stages. If you learn to gain speed and hit R at the right time during your jump you’re gonna go the distance of the damned screen.

It’s one of the best traversal options in this entire game and I love it. I used that badge more than anything other badge and it just works so well that it borderline feels like cheating, especially when you realize occasionally that you just bypassed a major hurdle in the stage because you were too busy getting air

01) Bubble

YEAH THAT’S RIGHT. Bubble. Listen, Super Mario World’s PR team buried the lead with this thing. The Bubble power is not just the most useful ability in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, it’s the most useful ability in ANY Mario game.

Firstly, it puts your character in an awesome-looking lavender outfit which I like. Especially on Toadette and Daisy they look fantastic.

But the Bubble ability itself is so so so powerful. Firstly there’s almost no enemy in the entire game that a single bubble doesn’t vaporize. But secondly, it goes through walls! Whereas the fireballs tend to stop at the smallest obstacle the bubbles just float on through without a care. Nintendo tries to do that pesky “koopa between two pipes” thing? Bubble says, “What Koopa?” It’s also fantastic for wayward-thrown shells.

And don’t worry, there’s more. The bubbles you fire act like small platforms. Hold down jump when landing on top of one to bounce on it like an enemy. Is there a large gap? Fire a bubble, wait a second, then fire another. Then just bounce across the two bubbles to the other side. It’s awesome.

Not only does Bubble give you this incredibly (and deceptively) powerful weapon, it also doubles as a platform! The versatility (as well as the dope fit) makes this, easily, the best ability in Super Mario Bros. Wonder. No questions.
