Baldur’s Gate 3 was released for PC in August of this year, followed by a PS5 launch a month later in September. While there are plans for it to come to Xbox as well, we still don’t have a release date.

Last we heard, Larian Studios was running into some technical issues with split-screen co-op on Xbox — specifically the Series S. Because the studio was obliged to launch the game with feature parity, they couldn’t remove split-screen from the Xbox version and until they got the issue solved, they couldn’t formally announce a release date.

Well, it’s now been another month since and we’ve got a new update on the status of Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox. Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke took to social media, revealing that the Xbox version of Baldur’s Gate 3 is “being actively playtest.”

More excitingly, he provided a release window — sometime this year.

“We’ll announce the exact release date when we’re sure it’s done,” he added.

This is actually sooner than we originally thought. Following the game’s launch, it was believed that Baldur’s Gate 3 wouldn’t come to Xbox until sometime in 2024, so the fact that it is now scheduled to arrive this year is some exciting news for Xbox gamers.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was released to critical acclaim for its narrative, gameplay and player choice. It set the bar for what RPGs should be with many praising the amount of player freedom and intertwined storylines that change depending on player choice. The characters, especially companions you come across, are also interesting and memorable.

Many deem Baldur’s Gate 3 a masterpiece and must-play game. Thankfully, Xbox gamers will be able to do so sometime this year. With the holiday season fast approaching, Baldur’s Gate 3 should make a wonderful gift to Xbox gamers who are fans of role-playing games.

For those who are already playing Baldur’s Gate 3 on PC and PS5, the next update — Patch #4 — is expected to arrive soon.
